jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

Ha! A reply to the ID said it used to be Aptenia cordifolia. So I was right! And then I grepped my blog for it and found it from 14 years ago: 2006-09-07-0942Z. [comment]

There's an ice plant found all over San Diego as a groundcover, but different from the finger-leaved Carpobrotus and Delosperma genuses, having semisucculent heart-shaped leaves. I had misremembered the genus name as beginning with an A, but couldn't find it in my blog. Just now I saw it identified on the Facebook Plant Identification group: Mesembryanthemum cordifolium, "heartleaf ice plant". [comment]

I'm starting to feel pain in my joints: shoulders, wrists, ankles. Don't know why, but if it continues I'm going to have to rethink my agreement with Nozick on the ethics of eating animals. Arthritis would really cramp my lifestyle. [comment]

I've been neglecting my blog lately, posting everything to Facebook instead.

Troubleshooting why a previously-working scraper stopped working today, I remembered WebDriver.get_screenshot_as_file("path.png") and found out the site had started returning the mobile page rather than the desktop page I was expecting. As I was already getting tired of Firefox using massive amounts of RAM in "headless" mode, I switched from using MOZ_HEADLESS=1 to using xvfb-run. I kept increasing the virtual screen size until it returned the desktop page. The Makefile recipe now runs: xvfb-run --server-args="-screen 0 2048x1024x24" $(PYTHON) $<. Problem solved, I think. Waiting to hear from my client. [comment]
