For years I've had the problem of upgrading Debian systems using a Windows boot manager, with LILO on the individual Linux partitions; forgetting to copy the partition boot sector to the Windows root. Finally, today, during an upgrade I happened to notice /etc/kernel/postinst.d, and copied my script to zzz-lilo.postinst, placing it dead last after LILO runs. Hopefully that will solve the problem once and for all.
