Just finished Milton Mayer's They Thought They Were Free, about the Germans in the 1930s. I was hoping to draw some useful parallels to the present-day United States, and while I was succeeding at first, I became bogged down the the last 2/3rds of the book. Perhaps I should try again someday; the prize could be the ability to see cops as people, the way Mayer saw Nazis as people.
